RV Camping with a Dog
Nothing beats heading out on the open road with your best friend at your side. For those of us whose best friends come with four legs, it takes a little extra preparation to ensure the adventure is happy and safe for the human and canine participants alike.
If you're planning to go RV camping with a dog, check out these three tips for making your expedition an im-paws-sibly good time.
1. Make a Detailed Packing List for Your Pup
While packing for your adventure, make a separate list of items just for your dog to ensure you don't forget anything important.
Some essentials when RV camping with a dog include:
A leash, harness, and collar with tags and your contact information
Enough food for the whole trip, plus a little extra
Medications, including flea and tick protection
A comfortable bed
A water bowl and plenty of water
Depending on the time of year, you may also want to bring a coat for your pup in case those evenings around the campfire get chilly. Make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations before heading out into the wilderness.
2. Get a Doggy Seatbelt
Car safety is just as important for your pup as it is for your human passengers. Your canine companion could be severely injured in an accident if not buckled in and could also distract the driver by trying to climb up in their lap. Additionally, even a very small dog can become a deadly projectile in a high-speed wreck.
There are many highly-rated seat belts for dogs on the market today. Choose one that fits your pooch comfortably. Your dog should be able to sit up and lie down while clipped in, but a properly-fitted seat belt should restrict side-to-side motion as much as possible.
3. Research Local Veterinarians Along the Way
Any time you're going RV camping with a dog, you should have an emergency plan in place in case your pup gets injured or sick while traveling. As you map out which cities you'll be passing through, take a look through each one and make a note of veterinarians in the area. Consider giving each clinic a call to make sure they take walk-in appointments.
Alternatively, look up emergency veterinary services along your route. These clinics are more likely to have space for new clients than other veterinary practices.
